Early twentieth-century conservation was both a prudential and a moral effort aiming to increase efficiency of resource use, decrease waste, and leave an ample supply for present and future generations. As the new science of ecology matured through the first half of the twentieth century, however, a growing number of botanists, Launching Out 11 zoologists, and aquatic scientists, Leopold eventually among them, began to see significance in the vast and dynamic intricacies of nature’s interrelationships.
